Best kept romantic vacation secret: North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Start in Duluth, go up to the border. There is a gorgeous high-end resort called Bluefin Bay, Grand Marais is a delight of a town, and there are plenty of less-expensive but very nice places to stay, too.
