Want a Free Advertising on a Heavyweight Blog like John Chow or Problogger? You might want to check out Entrecard.

Entrecard’s concept is similar to a “Drop Your Business Card” at a local lunch bar for a free lunch. But instead of a free lunch, you’ll get a free advertising. Your business card on Entrecard is a 125×125 image button. You’ve seen plenty of those around the blogosphere.

How does it work?

To participate, you have to sign up and install a widget on your site. The widget allows Entrecard members to drop their “Business Card”. You will get 1 credit for each card dropped on your widget. You will also get 1 credit when you drop your business card on other’s widget. When you accumulate enough credits, you can apply for free advertising on any site that installs the widget. The advertising will run for 1 full day. The site owner needs to approve the ad before it’ll appear on the site.

The number of credits needed to advertise on a site is measured by the site popularity. The more popular the site is, the more credits you need to advertise on that site. Entrecard measures the blog popularity by the number of cards dropped on its widget, the number of cards you drop on others, how many clicks the widget receives, etc.

The default cost of 1 day advertising starts at 2 credits. That’s what my site started with. Now it is at 4 credits. That’s nothing compared to John Chow that requires 119 credits (12 days waiting period.) Considering John Chow charges $500 per month for a 125×125 button, your 1 day free advertising on his site is worth about $16.67. I know it’s not prime placement, but a free ad on John Chow is definitely worth a lot more than that. Of course John will need to approve it.

How to get more credits?

The more cards you drop, the more credits you’ll get. You can also send credits to others. This allows you to use Entrecard credits as promotional tool. You can give it away in a contest in exchange of a review and a linkback for an example. You can participate in a contest where other gives away the credits. One of my advertiser Dax Desai is giving away 175 Entrecard credits.

Analysis

Now this is my thought. For blogger like John Chow or other big-time bloggers, I would imagine they want the number of credits needed to advertise on their site to be as high as possible. That would prevent Entrecard from taking a small bite out of their advertising revenue.

For a small time blogger like me, I think the lower the credit the better. This would encourage others to advertise on my site. I think of these advertisers as new visitors. When they advertise, it is a free advertising for my site.

1. A $1 million business or a $40 business

You don’t need big money to get started in network marketing. In my case, I started with $40 to be a distributor. Most people failed in network marketing or quit because they treated their business for what it costs, not for the opportunity it represents.

To me, my business is not a $40 venture. It’s my $1 million business. That’s the opportunity it represents. It’s no different than investing in real estate or stock market. You invest because of the potential and the opportunity.

2. Unrealistic Expectation

You joined network marketing hoping you will be rich in no time. It’s true network marketing can be a vehicle for anyone to realize their financial dream. But the same applies to any other business. You invested 4 years of your time to get a college degree and inherited debt along the way. Why? Because you invested in yourself. With better education comes better opportunity. So why should it be any different with Network Marketing? Network marketing is not a miracle or a wonder business. It doesn’t make you rich simply by being a part of it.

3. Lack of Focus

You spent too much time doing unnecessary things like administrative works related to your business. When you want to build your network marketing business, you should be spending most of your time growing it. Any other works will only take time away from you building your business and get your closer to your goals.

4. Poor Execution

Just because you are doing it, doesn’t mean you are “DOING” it. You need to execute your strategy flawlessly. For example, house Meeting is a great way to promote the product and the opportunity. But don’t setup your meeting on a time where it’s difficult for people to attend it. Or don’t host a meeting in a house if you expect 30 people are going to show up. I remember a saying that goes something like this ‘Fail to plan, and you plan to fail’.

5. Confusing Strategy

Network marketing is a business of duplication and replication. To do it successfully, you need a duplicatable strategy. If your distributors can’t replicate what you do, your business will be a one-person effort instead of a team effort. A lot of people are guilty of over-analyzing. I am a prime example. I like to create my own strategy that I think might work better for me. After poor results, I went back to the drawing board and worked with my sponsor to identify what I did wrong. It’s not hard to point out really.

I tried to do something that might work better for me, but not necessarily for everyone else. I tried to reinvent the wheel. Bad idea. Think about it. A proven system that has worked for so many people vs my own unproven system. It seems like a no-brainer but hey, we all make mistakes. I am glad I caught it early.

6. Unwilling To Do the Uncomfortable

If you are not doing something uncomfortable, you are not doing it right. If calling someone is uncomfortable, that’s exactly what you should be doing. If talking to someone about your opportunity is uncomfortable, you should do it even more. People refuse to do the uncomfortable because it takes them out of their comfort zone. Comfort zone is over-rated. It kills one’s desire to grow and innovate. I guess one tip to your success is “To Do the Uncomfortable”.

7. Lack of Conviction

When you get into network marketing, you can’t do it half-heartedly. It doesn’t mean you have to do it full-time or spend all the free time you have on it. It means you can’t second-guess your decision whether it’s the right business for you. The second-guessing work should have been done beforehand. Once you decide to do it, you should put your heart and soul to it. Do it with passion.

Person who show a lack of conviction in doing what they do will crack the moment someone question them their motivation and objective of doing what it is they do.
