This is an awesome news. The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage; paving the way for California to become the second state in the union after Massachusetts to allow gays and lesbians to marry. San Francisco was the first city in the US to allow gay marriage in the country. I remember it very clearly. It was in February of 2004. I was a witness for my friends (who are straight) marriage at the City Hall. The line for same-sex couples to get married was wrapped around the building. We were lucky because my friends made an appointment. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken if they didn’t make the appointment.
Being a resident of San Francisco I have always considered gays and lesbians as my brothers and sisters, whether I know them or not. Living in a city as diverse as San Francisco, I embrace the differences of the city and its residents. That what makes San Francisco so unique. It has tolerance for race, culture, and sexual orientation diversity. Yes, there are racists and bigots but you will find them pretty much anywhere. For the most part, people are tolerant.
Today’s ruling is a cause for celebration. “Domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage, the justices ruled 4-3 in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George.” I agree. Banning gay marriage is not only unconstitutional because it deprived people from pursuing their happiness, it is also divisive because it forces people to choose side politically for what I consider a basic human-right. And don’t even try to get all religious on me. There is no where in the bible it ever says a marriage should be a union between a man and a woman. Jesus spreads love and so should you. Hating on people because of their differences is very unchristian-like. Religion should teaches tolerance, spreading love, and embracing differences; not dividing people.
I am happy to live in a progressive-forward-thinking state that embraces differences and promotes tolerance. Way to go California. And to the gay and lesbian couples in California … CONGRATULATIONS. It’s been a long time coming for your endless pledge and fight for equality. Today is a VICTORY for human-kind, a step forward in fighting hate and bigotry.
