So my laptop died on me last night. I am sure it’s a combination of stupid Windows Vista and untested Windows Vista update. My computer simply won’t boot-up. I am normally the person everyone seek out for computer advise. But yesterday knowing how much data I might lose, I panicked and started calling everyone I know.
I am under the impression that I might not be able to recover anything from the NTFS partition without shelling some big $$$ for a professional to do it. A friend of mine told me I can just get a casing for the hard disk and do a manual transfer. I have always thought that would only work with FAT32 partition but it’s not so. It works for NTFS partition as well. That’s a big relief.
I tried loading the recovery discs I created per HP instruction but it didn’t work. Recovery discs my a…s. More like wasted discs. Thank goodness I didn’t get rid of the recovery partition on my hard disk. I called HP Support and apparently there is a back door to activate that partition and do the recovery from there.
If I can move back to XP Pro, I would. But after reading about the difficulties everyone went through with reinstalling XP Pro on an HP laptop, I figured it’s not worth the risks. My roommate has an external hard disk I can use to backup all my data so I will need to do that first.
Damn Microsoft sucks.
